Deputy President of Kenya (2022–2024)
Geoffrey Rigathi Gachagua (born 28 February 1965) is a Kenyan politician and businessman. He was born in Hiriga village, Nyeri County, to Mau Mau freedom fighters Gachagua Reriani and Martha Kirigo and is the younger brother of Nyeri’s first governor, Nderitu Gachagua. He attended Kabiruini Primary School, Kianyaga High School and the University of Nairobi, graduating with a BA in Political Science and Literature in 1988; he later completed paramilitary training at the Administration Police Institute in 1990 and obtained an advanced diploma in public administration from the Kenya School of Government (1999–2000).

He attended Kabiruini Primary School, Kianyaga High School and the University of Nairobi, graduating with a BA in Political Science and Literature in 1988; he later completed paramilitary training at the Administration Police Institute in 1990 and obtained an advanced diploma in public administration from the Kenya School of Government (1999–2000). After university he worked at Kenya’s Ministry of Home Affairs & National Heritage and served as a district officer in various districts. In the early 1990s he rose to become Permanent Secretary to the Cabinet and head of Public Service and later joined private business before serving (2001–2006) as personal assistant to then–Minister for Local Government Uhuru Kenyatta. Gachagua ran his businesses until 2017, when he was elected MP for Mathira Constituency, championing local procurement reforms and sponsoring an amendment to reserve government contracts for local firms. In 2022 William Ruto selected him as running mate; the pair won the August general election and he became Kenya’s second deputy president. As DP he declared himself the “kingpin” of the Mount Kenya region and led a high‑profile crackdown on illicit alcohol and substance abuse in Central Kenya. His tenure ended abruptly in October 2024 when he became the first sitting deputy president to be impeached after the Senate upheld charges that he had made inciteful statements and violated constitutional values.
