Former Governor Isaac Rutto has re-emerged as a central figure in the Rift Valley, aligning his CCM party with UDA to act as a firewall against Rigathi Gachagua's expanding opposition influence.

As Rigathi Gachagua builds his new DCP fortress, veteran firebrand Isaac Rutto is quietly emerging as the President’s key enforcer in the South Rift, reshaping the region’s power dynamics.
In the high-stakes chess game of Rift Valley politics, a familiar piece has returned to the center of the board. Isaac Rutto, the leader of Chama Cha Mashinani (CCM) and former Bomet Governor, is no longer the rebel shouting from the periphery. Following his formal entry into the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) coalition earlier this year, Rutto has become the linchpin in President William Ruto’s strategy to fence off the South Rift from the encroaching influence of the opposition.
With Rigathi Gachagua launching his Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP) and aggressively courting the disenchanted "hustler" vote, the President needs a counterweight who speaks the language of the grassroots. Enter Isaac Rutto. Known for his populism and "Mashinani" (grassroots) philosophy, he is uniquely positioned to neutralize Gachagua’s narrative.
Rutto’s alignment with UDA is pragmatic. By folding his CCM machinery into the ruling coalition’s operations, he gains proximity to state power while UDA gains a seasoned general in Bomet and Kericho—counties that have historically shown flashes of independence. Analysts note that Rutto’s role is to ensure that Gachagua’s "mountain revolt" does not bleed into the Rift Valley.
“Isaac is the firewall,” notes political commentator Prof. Edward Kisiang’ani. “He has the credibility to tell the Rift Valley voters that sticking with the government is their best bet, effectively blocking Gachagua’s entry.”
For Isaac Rutto, this is a remarkable second act. Once a fierce critic of the "system," he is now its most critical defender in the region. As the 2027 formations crystalize, the "Rutto vs. Gachagua" proxy war will likely define the battle for the rural vote.
The Bomet powerhouse is back, and this time, he is fighting from the inside.
