Deputy President Kithure Kindiki has dismissed claims that his position is up for negotiation in 2027, telling ODM allies that the seat is occupied and the Mountain region remains unbowed.

In a fiery rebuke to coalition partners eyeing his seat, Deputy President Kithure Kindiki has declared the struggle for the 2027 running mate slot a "closed chapter," signaling a ruthless consolidation of power in the Mountain region.
The veneer of diplomatic silence in Kenya’s ruling coalition shattered this weekend. Deputy President Kithure Kindiki, often seen as the scholarly technician of the Kenya Kwanza administration, traded his professorial demeanor for political bare-knuckles during a tour of Murang’a County. His message was stark, unscripted, and directed squarely at the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM): The Deputy Presidency is not vacant, not negotiable, and not available.
This outburst comes days after ODM stalwarts, led by Siaya Senator Oburu Oginga, publicly intimated that the 2027 running mate slot should be the prize for their cooperation in the "Broad-Based Government." Kindiki’s response—delivered while inspecting the Ichagaki–Gikomora–Ngaburi Road—was less of a rebuttal and more of a territory marking.
“We are the masters of politics in this country. We do not talk much, but we know when to speak,” Kindiki told a cheering crowd, abandoning the usual protocols of executive restraint. His assertion that the "DP position is going nowhere" serves two tactical purposes. First, it reassures President William Ruto’s core constituency in Mt Kenya that their stake in the presidency is secure. Second, it attempts to nip in the bud the growing narrative that the region is politically orphaned following the impeachment of Rigathi Gachagua.
Political analysts suggest Kindiki is pivoting from being an appointee to a regional kingpin. “He realizes that technical competence isn't enough,” says Nairobi-based pollster Herman Manyora. “To survive the piranha tank of 2027, he must show teeth. This was him showing teeth.”
The friction reveals the fragility of the current political marriage. While President Ruto needs ODM to stabilize parliament, the Mt Kenya voting bloc views the opposition’s encroachment with deep suspicion. Kindiki’s declaration acts as a firewall, promising the region that their interests—personified by his office—will not be bartered away in boardroom deals.
As the sun set over Murang’a, the message was unequivocal. The "scholarly" Deputy President has entered the trenches, and the battle for the soul of the Mountain has officially begun.
