In a bold political gamble that threatens to fracture the Kenya Kwanza coalition, Kipipiri MP Wanjiku Muhia has openly urged the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) to relentlessly pursue the Deputy President's office.
The political chessboard in Kenya has been upended once again. Speaking at a highly charged rally in Narok North on Saturday, February 14, 2026, Wanjiku Muhia, the vocal Jubilee-aligned lawmaker, threw a grenade into the already fragile peace of the "broad-based" government. Her message was simple, provocative, and calculated: ODM should not shy away from demanding the second-highest office in the land.
This declaration comes amidst a swirling storm of succession politics following the impeachment of former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua and the uneasy tenure of his successor, Kithure Kindiki. Muhia's comments appear to be a direct challenge to the status quo, signaling that the Mount Kenya region's political monolithic block is cracking.
"We are not tribal," Muhia declared, explicitly endorsing the ambition of Raila Odinga's party to ascend to the DP position—a role currently held by Kithure Kindiki. This statement is a direct rebuttal to her Thika Town counterpart, Alice Ng'ang'a, who recently threatened that the Mountain would "storm out" of government if Kindiki were replaced by an ODM stalwart like Oburu Oginga.
The subtext is clear: the gloves are off. By inviting ODM to take the seat, Muhia is either playing a sophisticated game of reverse psychology or signaling a profound realignment where Mount Kenya leaders are willing to sacrifice their own "son" (Kindiki) to punish President Ruto's administration for perceived betrayals.
The backdrop to this drama is the ultimatum issued by ODM leader Oburu Oginga. Following the death of veteran opposition leader Raila Odinga in late 2025, Oburu has taken a hardline stance. He has stated unequivocally that ODM's support for President Ruto's re-election in 2027 is conditional on one thing: the Deputy Presidency.
Muhia warned ODM against "giving up" on their request, effectively encouraging the opposition to destabilize the current administration from within. She further cautioned against joining the fledgling DCP party, urging focus on the main prize.
For the average Kenyan, this high-stakes politicking translates to continued uncertainty. As the shilling fluctuates and the cost of living remains a biting reality, the political class seems locked in a game of musical chairs, with the Deputy President's seat as the ultimate trophy.
"The Mountain does not speak with one voice anymore. If ODM wants the seat, let them come and take it. We will not block the door based on tribe," Muhia told the cheering crowd, setting the stage for a tumultuous political year.
