General Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo, widely known as "Hemedti" (born c. 1974), is the commander of the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) in Sudan. Formerly the Deputy Chairman of the Transitional Sovereignty Council, he broke with the regular army in April 2023, plunging Sudan into a devastating civil war. By 2025, he established a rival administration in areas under RSF control, terming it the "Government of Peace and Unity." Rising from a camel-trading background to lead the feared Janjaweed militias in Darfur, Hemedti amassed immense wealth and power through gold mining and mercenary activities. He presents himself as a champion of Sudan's marginalized periphery against the riverine elite, despite his forces facing widespread accusations of ethnic cleansing and war crimes.
