Wavinya Ndeti EGH (born 8 November 1967) is the 2nd Governor of Machakos County, elected in August 2022 and the county’s first female governor. She previously served as Member of Parliament for Kathiani (2008–2013) and as Assistant Minister for Youth and Sports in Kenya’s Grand Coalition Government. Before her 2022 win, she ran for governor in 2013 and 2017; in the 2017 race she polled 209,141 votes against Alfred Mutua’s 249,603 and pursued petitions up to the Supreme Court. She later served nationally as Chief Administrative Secretary in the Ministry of Transport, Infrastructure, Housing and Urban Development, and chaired the Kenya Water Institute Governing Council. Ndeti studied in the United Kingdom, earning a BSc in Computer Science from London South Bank University, an MSc in Business Systems Analysis and Design from City, University of London, and an MBA from Heriot-Watt University; challenges to her credentials in 2022 were dismissed by the IEBC and flagged as false by fact-checkers. Politically, she founded and led Chama Cha Uzalendo before joining Wiper Democratic Movement–Kenya in 2017. As governor, her agenda has focused on revenue modernization, agriculture value chains, water access, and youth empowerment, and in 2024 she received the Voice Business Summit Achievers Award for Outstanding African Governor
1. Institution-building and governance reforms She inherited a non-functional public service. Her administration developed at least ten key policy documents, including human resources policies, to streamline operations and guide service delivery.
2. Healthcare infrastructure expansion She has constructed more than 25 new health facilities across Machakos and begun elevating existing hospitals to Level 4 status. Notably, Muindi Mbingu Hospital is being developed into a regional teaching and referral facility akin to Kenyatta National Hospital.
