Robert Alai Onyango is a prominent Kenyan blogger, digital activist, and politician who has been serving as the Member of County Assembly (MCA) for Kileleshwa Ward in Nairobi City County since 9 August 2022. Known for his outspoken and often controversial style, Alai rose to prominence through his tech-focused blog and real-time social media updates, particularly during national crises and breaking news events. He gained widespread attention for providing live coverage of the 2013 Westgate Mall terrorist attack, becoming a key source of on-the-ground information for Kenyans and the international community. Alai has been a polarizing figure in Kenya’s digital space, celebrated for exposing corruption and amplifying civic issues while also facing repeated arrests and criticism for sharing sensitive information. Notably, in 2014, he was arrested after publishing President Uhuru Kenyatta’s personal contacts online, and in 2019, he was again detained for posting graphic photos of police officers killed in the Wajir terror attack. Despite these controversies, Alai has transitioned into formal politics, leveraging his large following and digital influence to advocate for governance transparency, community development, and citizens’ rights. Today, he remains one of Kenya’s most influential online voices, bridging activism, technology, and political leadership.
