Ousmane Sonko (born 15 July 1974) is the Prime Minister of Senegal, appointed in April 2024 following the victory of his protégé, President Bassirou Diomaye Faye. A former tax inspector and whistleblower, Sonko's fiery anti-establishment rhetoric galvanized the Senegalese youth against the previous administration. He was barred from running for president due to a conviction but successfully campaigned for Faye from prison. His premiership focuses on "sovereignty," renegotiating mining and energy contracts, and reducing French influence. In 2025, he claimed to have brokered a historic peace deal with the MFDC rebels in Casamance, his home region. He has also been a vocal critic of the CFA Franc currency, proposing its replacement to ensure economic independence.
