Stephen Kalonzo Musyoka, born on 24 December 1953 in Tseikuru, Kitui County, is a Kenyan lawyer, diplomat, and seasoned politician who served as the country’s tenth Vice President from January 2008 to April 2013. Educated at the University of Nairobi with a Bachelor of Laws and later at Tufts University’s Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy, Musyoka began his political career in 1985 as the MP for Kitui North under KANU, quickly rising to positions such as National Organising Secretary of KANU, Assistant Minister for Works, Deputy Speaker of the National Assembly, and eventually holding key cabinet roles in Foreign Affairs, Education, and Environment. He gained international recognition for mediating regional peace efforts in Sudan and Somalia while spearheading domestic reforms in education and environmental management. Following the disputed 2007 presidential elections, Musyoka was appointed Vice President by President Mwai Kibaki in a coalition government to stabilise the country during a national crisis. Serving until 2013, he oversaw governance reforms, constitutional implementation, and Kenya’s diplomatic engagements. After leaving the vice presidency, he co-founded the Wiper Democratic Movement, became a key opposition leader, and remained central in coalition politics as a running mate to Raila Odinga in both the 2013 and 2017 presidential elections, cementing his role as one of Kenya’s most prominent political figures.
