Peninah Gathoni Wamuchomba (born 19 September 1973), popularly known as Gathoni wa Muchomba, is a Kenyan politician, former vernacular radio star and media entrepreneur who serves as the Member of Parliament for Githunguri Constituency in Kiambu County, elected in 2022 on a United Democratic Alliance (UDA) ticket. She previously served as Kiambu County Woman Representative (2017–2022), where she made headlines after garnering over 922,000 votes—one of the highest tallies for any candidate in that election—and held leadership roles in Parliament including chairing the Kenya Women Parliamentary Association (KEWOPA) and the Committee on Implementation (CIOC), as well as serving in key committees such as Transport, Public Works & Housing (vice-chair), Agriculture & Livestock, and Communication, Information & Innovation. A trained teacher and communicator, she studied at Precious Blood Riruta before earning a Bachelor of Education and a Master’s in Communication from the University of Nairobi, later becoming a prominent Kikuyu-language radio presenter at Kameme FM and Inooro FM and founding Utugi TV, a vernacular digital station targeting farmers—experience that grounds her strong grassroots connection and interest in agriculture and media management. Wamuchomba is widely recognised for her outspoken, often dissenting positions, even when they put her at odds with her own party leadership. In 2023 she was one of the few UDA MPs who publicly opposed and voted against the Finance Bill 2023, describing it as “punitive, oppressive and scandalous” and insisting that the government must listen to citizens’ objections—remarks that drew rebukes from President William Ruto and praise from civil society and sections of the public. She has also courted controversy over earlier comments on MPs’ salaries and polygamy, which sparked national debate and reinforced her image as a fearless, sometimes polarising figure who “speaks her mind” regardless of political cost. Beyond domestic politics, her rising profile was recognised in 2025 when she was selected as one of the Amujae Leaders by the Ellen Johnson Sirleaf Presidential Center for Women and Development, highlighting her as part of a new cohort of African women being prepared for top-tier public leadership.
