Kenya’s Education CS Julius Ogamba said parents will not pay exam fees after budget cuts, promising the government will include exam funding in the revised budget
MERU, May 18
Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Migos Ogamba has reassured Kenyans that parents will not be required to pay national exam fees for their children, despite ongoing budget constraints facing the Ministry of Education.
Speaking during a visit to Meru County, CS Ogamba emphasized that the government remains committed to fully funding national examinations, ensuring that no student is excluded due to financial challenges.
“We are aware of the budget shortfalls, but I want to make it clear—no parent will be asked to pay exam fees. The government will take care of this to ensure every learner sits for their exams,” Ogamba affirmed.
The Cabinet Secretary’s statement comes amid growing concern over the impact of recent budget cuts on education services. Parents and educators had expressed worry that students—particularly from low-income backgrounds—might be burdened with extra costs.
Ogamba, however, dismissed those fears and confirmed that exam funding will be prioritized within the revised education budget.
The CS stressed that sitting for national examinations is a constitutional right for every learner and assured that the Ministry would make necessary adjustments to uphold that principle.
“We are working closely with the Treasury to ensure that exam funding is secured. No child should be denied their future because of financial strain,” he said.
Ogamba reiterated that despite economic pressures, education remains a top priority for the government. He also appealed to stakeholders and institutions to remain calm and support ongoing efforts to maintain smooth academic operations.
