By positioning himself as a successor to Odinga, referring to himself as “Baba mdogo” (the junior father), he is openly appealing to Odinga's traditional support base. “Now Baba has slept. I want us to remain united in his honour,” he stated, pledging to lead their supporters to “Canaan,” a metaphor for the presidency that was central to Odinga's campaigns.
