Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka claims communities in Luo Nyanza have “lingering questions” about the death of former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, a statement made while signaling a major realignment of opposition politics.

Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka on Sunday, November 24, 2025, stated that there are unresolved questions within the Luo community regarding the circumstances of former Prime Minister Raila Odinga's death. The remarks, made more than a month after Odinga’s passing, come as Musyoka signals a significant political reorganization within the opposition, including a potential new alliance with former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua.
“Our brothers in Luoland are asking many questions. What is it that befell Baba? I cannot even attempt to answer those questions,” Musyoka said during a public address. He emphasized the need for unity in the wake of Odinga's death to honor his legacy, urging the community to resist divisive figures.
Raila Odinga, a dominant figure in Kenyan politics for decades, died at the age of 80 on Wednesday, October 15, 2025. His death from cardiac arrest occurred while he was receiving Ayurvedic treatment at a hospital in Kerala, India, following a period of deteriorating health. At the time of his passing, Musyoka was on a scheduled 10-day trip to the United Kingdom and received the news upon his arrival in London. In his official condolence message on October 15, Musyoka described Odinga as his “dear brother,” a “force of nature,” and “the President who won but was never declared and sworn into office.”
Musyoka's recent comments mark a notable shift in tone and political strategy. By positioning himself as a successor to Odinga, referring to himself as “Baba mdogo” (the junior father), he is openly appealing to Odinga's traditional support base. “Now Baba has slept. I want us to remain united in his honour,” he stated, pledging to lead their supporters to “Canaan,” a metaphor for the presidency that was central to Odinga's campaigns.
The statement about “lingering questions” taps into public concerns that were noted shortly after Odinga’s death. An October 20, 2025, report highlighted questions among the public regarding the level of transparency from official sources about the former Prime Minister's health leading up to his death. In the weeks before his passing, Odinga's health had been a subject of public speculation, with his party, the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM), dismissing rumors of his ill-health as political misinformation.
In an interview on October 19, 2025, Musyoka himself revealed that he had been unable to reach Odinga by phone for ten days prior to his death, which left him feeling “unsettled.” He had attempted to contact Odinga to invite him to the Wiper Party's National Delegates Conference.
Musyoka’s latest political maneuvers suggest the formal dissolution of the Azimio la Umoja–One Kenya Coalition, which was led by Odinga. “I was with Raila in Azimio. Now that he is sadly no more, no one knows if the coalition still has its direction,” Musyoka said on November 24. He confirmed that discussions were underway for a new political formation ahead of the 2027 general election, explicitly mentioning early-stage negotiations for a pact with Gachagua's Democratic Congress Party. This follows a period where Musyoka has led the United Opposition in issuing parallel statements to the government on national issues, including electoral reforms and constitutionalism.
