Viswanathan "Vishy" Anand (born 11 December 1969) is an Indian chess grandmaster and a five-time World Chess Champion. He is the "Tiger of Madras" and the godfather of Indian chess. Anand became India's first Grandmaster in 1988. His victory in the 2000 FIDE World Championship sparked a chess boom in India, leading to the current generation of prodigies (Gukesh, Pragg, etc.). Anand held the unified World Title from 2007 to 2013 before losing it to Magnus Carlsen. Even in his 50s, he remains a world-class player, consistently ranked in the Top 10/15. He currently serves as the Deputy President of FIDE and runs the Westbridge Anand Chess Academy (WACA) to mentor young talent.
