Fabiano Luigi Caruana (born 30 July 1992) is an Italian-American chess grandmaster. He is widely considered the best prepared player in the world due to his deep opening theory. A child prodigy, he moved from the US to Europe to pursue chess, representing Italy before switching back to the US federation in 2015. He achieved the third-highest rating in history (2844) in 2014 after a historic performance at the Sinquefield Cup (starting 7/7 wins). Caruana came closest to dethroning Magnus Carlsen in the 2018 World Championship match, drawing all 12 classical games before losing in rapid tiebreaks. He remains a fixture in the World Top 3 and is a multiple-time US Champion. He also hosts a popular chess podcast, "C-Squared."
