Sven Magnus Øen Carlsen (born 30 November 1990) is a Norwegian chess grandmaster who is widely regarded as the greatest chess player of all time. A child prodigy, he became a Grandmaster at 13 years old. He reigned as the undisputed World Chess Champion from 2013 to 2023, voluntarily abdicating his title because he felt he had nothing left to prove in the classical format. Despite giving up the crown, he remains the highest-rated player in history (peak 2882) and continues to dominate the world rankings. Carlsen is known for his universal style, deep endgame understanding, and relentless will to win "drawn" positions. He has revolutionized chess by proving that human intuition still matters in the age of engines. Outside of classical chess, he is a perennial World Rapid and Blitz Champion. He is also a successful entrepreneur, having co-founded the Play Magnus Group (acquired by Chess.com) and is a high-stakes fantasy football player and poker enthusiast.
