Jomo Kenyatta (born 20 October 1893 in Gatundu, Kiambu) led Kenya to independence and served as the country's first Prime Minister (1963–1964) and first President (1964–1978). Considered the founding father of the nation, he promoted a moderate, pro-Western course, advocated national unity under the Harambee slogan and oversaw infrastructure, agricultural and educational development until his death on 22 August 1978 following a stroke.
