Joe Kadenge (16 March 1935–7 July 2019) was a winger for Maragoli United, Abaluhya FC (now AFC Leopards), and the Kenya national team, earning 63 caps and 25 goals. He is widely regarded as Kenya’s finest footballer, his artistry immortalised by the commentary phrase “Kadenge na mpira.” With Abaluhya he won the 1966 league title, and he is often credited with scoring one of the fastest goals in Kenya’s top flight while at Maragoli in 1963. After playing, he managed Maragoli United (1975–1980) and briefly coached the national team in 2002. His death in 2019 prompted national tributes and public memorials, including a ceremony at Kakamega’s Bukhungu Stadium before burial in Vihiga County—reflecting his status as an enduring cultural icon of Kenyan football’s golden era.
