David Munyua (born 25 October 1995) is a Kenyan professional darts player and veterinarian who achieved international prominence for becoming the first Kenyan to qualify for and win a match at the Professional Darts Corporation (PDC) World Darts Championship. Hailing from the town of Murang'a, Kenya, Munyua’s rise to the global stage is widely regarded as a significant milestone in the history of African darts. Born and raised in Murang'a, Munyua pursued a career in veterinary medicine, a profession he maintains full-time alongside his sporting endeavors. His path to professional darts was unconventional; he only began playing the sport in 2022 after encountering it at a local pub. After a chance session where his first dart hit the bullseye, Munyua developed a dedicated interest in the game, purchasing his own board and teaching himself to score and compete. Within three years, his rapid improvement allowed him to transition from casual local play to competitive regional tournaments. Munyua qualified for the 2026 PDC World Darts Championship by winning the African Darts Group (ADG) qualifier, where he defeated South African player Cameron Carolissen in the final. This victory marked a historic moment for Kenyan sports, as he became the first representative from his nation to secure a spot in the prestigious PDC tournament held at London's Alexandra Palace. Prior to this, Munyua had never travelled outside of Africa, and he relied on sponsorship support to fund his journey to the United Kingdom. At the 2026 PDC World Darts Championship, Munyua further cemented his legacy by pulling off one of the greatest upsets in the sport's history. In his debut first-round match on 18 December 2025, he faced world number 18 and former World Grand Prix champion, Mike De Decker. Although he trailed 2–0 in sets, Munyua staged a remarkable comeback, winning three consecutive sets to claim a 3–2 victory. His performance included a crucial 135-checkout that helped shift the momentum of the match. This win made him the first Kenyan player to ever record a victory at the World Darts Championship, earning him widespread recognition, including public commendations from the Kenyan presidency and international media. Outside of his sporting life, Munyua remains a dedicated veterinarian, balancing his clinical practice with intensive training. He specializes in treating livestock and pets, often coordinating with colleagues to cover his professional responsibilities during tournaments. Known by the nickname "Why Not?"—a phrase he uses to represent his willingness to take on ambitious challenges—Munyua has become a symbol of potential for Kenyan athletes. His historic run has sparked renewed interest in darts within Kenya, with advocates working to establish more structured support and training for the sport in the region. Following his exit in the second round to Dutchman Kevin Doets, Munyua returned home to significant public acclaim, continuing to serve as a pioneer for the development of professional darts in East Africa.
