Beatrice Kedeveresia Elachi (born 1973) is a Kenyan politician and legislator who currently serves as the Member of Parliament for Dagoretti North Constituency in Nairobi under the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM), having been elected in the August 2022 general election. She previously made history as the first female Majority Chief Whip in Kenya’s Senate, where she served as a Nominated Senator and Jubilee Party whip from 2013 to 2017, before being elected the first Speaker of the Nairobi County Assembly in September 2017, a position she held until her resignation in August 2020. In 2021–2022 she served at the national executive level as Chief Administrative Secretary (CAS) in the Ministry of Public Service, Gender, Senior Citizens Affairs and Special Programmes, rounding off a decade of leadership roles at county and national level before her return to elective politics as MP. Born in Kakamega County, Elachi attended St. Teresa’s Primary School and Moi Girls Vokoli High School, later studying Peace and Security Studies at Africa Nazarene University where she obtained both a Bachelor’s and a Master’s degree, and undertaking additional leadership training in Europe. Before entering frontline politics she worked in the gender and governance space, including roles with UN Women-linked programmes, the Collaborative Centre for Gender and Development, and as Executive Director of the League of Kenya Women Voters, as well as party leadership positions such as Secretary-General of the Alliance Party of Kenya. This background in peacebuilding, gender advocacy and political organising informs her current focus in Dagoretti North on urban livelihoods, youth opportunities and inclusive governance, while her trajectory—from grassroots activism to county speaker, CAS and MP—has made her a prominent example of women’s leadership in Kenya’s devolved and national politics.
