An early morning fire in Kibera’s Makina area on May 24 tragically killed at least six people and injured around 20 others, destroying over 40 informal houses and displacing numerous families.
Nairobi, Kenya — A tragic fire tore through the Makina area of Kibera slums in the early hours of Saturday morning, May 24, claiming the lives of at least six people and leaving approximately 20 others injured. The inferno, which erupted behind Kambi along the route to Eagles, swiftly engulfed dozens of informal wooden structures, rendering more than 40 households homeless.
Local authorities confirmed that the fatalities included one man, two women, and three children. The injured were rushed to nearby hospitals for urgent medical attention, as emergency crews battled the flames and worked to assist survivors.
Kibra Member of Parliament Peter Orero, who visited the scene shortly after the incident, expressed profound sorrow over the loss. “This is a heartbreaking moment for all of us in Kibra,” he said. “Our thoughts and prayers are with the affected families. I urge all residents to support one another in this time of grief.”
Orero further pledged a full investigation into the cause of the fire and emphasized the need for long-term safety interventions in the densely populated informal settlements. “We must implement lasting solutions to prevent such devastating incidents from recurring,” he added.
The MP also extended his appreciation to the Nairobi City County fire brigade and the Kenya Red Cross for their rapid and courageous response, which helped contain the blaze and assist victims.
In the aftermath of the fire, humanitarian organizations and local leaders have begun mobilizing support for displaced residents, including the provision of temporary shelter, food, clothing, and counseling services.
Kibera, one of Africa’s largest informal settlements, remains highly vulnerable to fires due to congested housing, lack of adequate infrastructure, and limited access to emergency services. The latest tragedy has once again underscored the urgent need for comprehensive urban planning and investment in disaster preparedness across Nairobi’s informal neighborhoods.
Authorities are urging residents with information about the incident to come forward as investigations continue.
