Nyeri Senator Launches Expansion at Overcrowded Tetu Vocational Training College

Nyeri, Kenya — Senator Wahome Wamatinga on Thursday led the groundbreaking ceremony for the long-awaited expansion of Tetu Vocational Training College, a project aimed at easing severe overcrowding at the institution.

Originally built to accommodate around 100 students, the college now serves over 1,600 learners, many of whom are forced to attend classes in makeshift tents or along building corridors due to space constraints.

Speaking during the event, Senator Wamatinga emphasized the urgent need to provide students with a safe and conducive learning environment. “This college is producing skilled, job-ready youth, but we must match that progress with adequate infrastructure,” he stated.

The first phase of the expansion will include the construction of two new classrooms, with plans for additional development already in motion. Wamatinga noted that President William Ruto, during a recent tour of Nyeri County, pledged support for the construction of six more classrooms, which will further alleviate the institution’s capacity challenges.

“Investing in vocational training is one of the smartest ways to empower our youth and transform our economy from the ground up,” said Wamatinga, adding that the project is not just about physical structures but about creating a future of opportunity and dignity for the county’s young people.

The expansion is expected to significantly improve the quality of technical education and enhance the college’s ability to meet the growing demand for hands-on, marketable skills across the region.
