Approximately 400 secondary school principals in Makueni are undergoing a training in financial management to improve how they handle school funds
MAKUENI, May 18
Approximately 400 secondary school principals from across Makueni County have begun a three-day financial management training aimed at strengthening accountability and efficiency in the handling of school funds.
The training, which is being facilitated by the Ministry of Education, focuses on key areas such as budgeting, auditing, procurement procedures, and financial reporting. It comes at a time when increased scrutiny is being placed on how public schools manage their allocated resources.
Makueni County Director of Education, Charles Nyakundi, emphasized the importance of equipping school heads with solid financial skills to ensure education funds are used transparently and in line with government guidelines.
“This training is critical in enhancing the capacity of our school managers. We want to ensure that every shilling is accounted for and that school resources are managed with integrity and professionalism,” said Nyakundi.
The principals are expected to gain practical insights on how to handle government capitation funds, donor contributions, and school-generated income. Trainers will also guide them on how to prepare for audits and avoid common pitfalls that lead to financial mismanagement.
The training aligns with the government’s broader efforts to curb misappropriation of education funds and ensure value for money in public institutions.
Education officials say the sessions are also meant to prepare principals for the increasing responsibilities associated with the government’s push toward free and quality secondary education.
Many of the participating principals welcomed the initiative, noting that the financial responsibilities they shoulder require continuous learning and support.
“Managing school finances today is like running a small enterprise. We’re grateful for this opportunity to sharpen our financial literacy and ensure our schools remain compliant,” said one school head.
