In a landmark move to support the nationwide transition to the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC), the Kenyan government has allocated KSh 980 million toward the retraining of high school teachers across the country. The initiative, announced by Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Sunkuli Ogamba, marks a pivotal moment in the country’s educational reform journey as it prepares for the first cohort of Grade 9 students to enter senior secondary school in January 2026.

Speaking at a national conference for school principals held in Mombasa, CS Ogamba outlined the government’s strategic investment in teacher capacity development. “This funding will support intensive retooling of our educators in specialized pathways—ranging from sciences to the arts and vocational training. We are ensuring our teachers are not just ready, but empowered to deliver,” he said.

The KSh 980 million package will be used to facilitate training workshops, curriculum familiarization, and certification programs tailored to the CBC model, which emphasizes skills acquisition, innovation, and learner-centered teaching. The retooling will especially target teachers who will be handling senior school pathways—namely STEM, Humanities and Arts, and Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET).

CS Ogamba also applauded school principals for their leadership in advocating for quality education and emphasized their role in shaping a successful rollout. He noted that the government is considering additional budget support for infrastructure improvements and insurance for school assets, in response to key resolutions raised at the conference.

The Education Ministry has confirmed that regional teacher training sessions will begin rolling out by the end of Q3 2025, signaling its intent to make the CBC transition a nationwide success. “Our focus is not just curriculum change—it’s culture change,” Ogamba added.

The CBC journey, first introduced in 2017, continues to reshape Kenya’s education system to align with global best practices and workforce demands. The senior secondary phase is seen as a critical phase in preparing learners for university, career pathways, or entrepreneurship in a rapidly evolving economy.
