Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) patron Irungu Nyakera has officially launched his 2027 Nairobi gubernatorial bid, promising a radical, managerial overhaul to eradicate the systemic cartels suffocating the capital's business ecosystem.
Speaking passionately to urban stakeholders, the former Kenya Medical Supplies Authority (KEMSA) chairperson outlined a comprehensive blueprint designed to rescue Nairobi from what he terms an era of catastrophic political mismanagement.
This bold declaration arrives at a critical juncture for Nairobi's 8.5 million residents, who are increasingly burdened by exorbitant permit fees, deteriorating infrastructure, and a lack of basic services. Nyakera's core argument is that the city fundamentally requires a seasoned technocrat, rather than a career politician, to unlock its stagnant multi-billion shilling economic potential.
Nyakera's primary target is the convoluted and highly corrupt licensing regime currently governing the city. He highlighted the punitive escalation of single business permits, which have inexplicably surged from KES 5,000 to over KES 15,000 in just three years. This aggressive taxation, he argues, operates without a corresponding improvement in municipal service delivery, actively driving small and medium enterprises into bankruptcy.
He forcefully criticized the current administration's inability to effectively manage revenue collection. Despite operating a supposedly digitized, cashless system, Nairobi consistently fails to meet its internal revenue targets. Nyakera estimates the city possesses the inherent capacity to collect a minimum of KES 40 billion annually, funds currently hemorrhaging through deeply entrenched, systemic corruption.
Beyond fiscal discipline, Nyakera is championing a massive infrastructural pivot aimed at the working-class majority who physically power the city's economy daily.
The essence of Nyakera's campaign rests on accountability and absolute transparency. He maintains that the continuous election of politicians solely focused on short-term populism has paralyzed Nairobi's long-term strategic planning. By advocating for a strict, managerial approach, he intends to restore investor confidence and streamline intergovernmental relations.
His vision requires an administration willing to confront the vested interests that have historically hijacked public tenders and urban planning regulations for immense personal gain.
"We must actually give a proven manager the unhindered opportunity to lead Nairobi, and only then will we see undeniable, structural change," Nyakera affirmed to his growing base of supporters.
