Former Chief Justice David Maraga has drawn clear battle lines for 2027, conditioning any political pact with Fred Matiang’i and Kalonzo Musyoka on their acceptance of his presidential leadership and a strict anti-corruption, rule-of-law agenda, reshaping nascent opposition alliances.

Former Chief Justice David Maraga has publicly dictated non-negotiable terms for a potential 2027 electoral alliance with former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang'i and Wiper Party Leader Kalonzo Musyoka, insisting he must be the presidential flagbearer. Speaking during an interview on the Obinna Show on Monday, November 25, 2025, Maraga asserted that any collaborator must fully subscribe to his vision for Kenya, which is anchored on combating corruption, upholding the rule of law, and empowering the nation's youth.
"If he comes and embraces my vision, we will work together," Maraga stated, referring to Matiang'i. "Anybody who wants to work with him must accept him as the flag bearer, with others rallying behind him," he added, making it clear he would not "cede ground to anyone." This firm stance establishes a significant precondition for the formation of a new political coalition aimed at challenging the incumbent administration.
Maraga extended the same conditions to Wiper Leader Kalonzo Musyoka, with whom he noted a long-standing friendship from their time as law classmates at the University of Nairobi. "Mr Kalonzo is a good man... I am open to working with him, but only if he embraces my vision for the country," Maraga explained, reiterating that his principles are the bedrock of any potential partnership.
Maraga's stringent conditions enter a complex and increasingly crowded opposition landscape. Both Matiang'i and Musyoka have already been declared presidential candidates by their respective parties. On October 30, 2025, the Jubilee Party's National Delegates Conference endorsed Dr. Fred Matiang'i as its presidential flag bearer for the 2027 General Election, marking a significant political comeback for the former powerful minister. Matiang'i's campaign is reportedly built on a platform of discipline, integrity, and service delivery.
Similarly, the Wiper Patriotic Front nominated Kalonzo Musyoka as its presidential candidate on October 10, 2025. Musyoka has positioned himself as a key figure in the opposition, aiming to build a broad coalition to challenge President William Ruto. The declarations of these candidacies complicate Maraga's demand to lead any potential alliance, setting the stage for intricate political negotiations.
The former Chief Justice, who is running on the United Green Movement (UGM) party ticket, also revealed that his decision to enter politics was significantly influenced by the 2024 youth-led protests against the Finance Bill. He views the Gen Z movement as a "wake-up call for leaders to address youth grievances" and has positioned himself as a moral alternative to the current political establishment.
While opening the door for conditional alliances with opposition figures, Maraga emphatically ruled out any possibility of collaborating with President William Ruto. He described their values as fundamentally different, comparing them to "day and night." "I cannot work with someone who orders people to be shot in the leg, insisting that their paths can never align," Maraga stated, cementing his position in the anti-Ruto camp. This declaration solidifies his intent to challenge, rather than join, the current government.
The emergence of Maraga as a presidential contender and his uncompromising stance on leadership and policy introduce a new dynamic into the 2027 succession politics. His reputation as a principled defender of the constitution, most notably demonstrated by the Supreme Court's annulment of the 2017 presidential election, lends him significant credibility, particularly among voters disillusioned with traditional politics.
However, his insistence on being the presidential candidate poses a direct challenge to the ambitions of established political figures like Matiang'i and Musyoka, who command their own spheres of influence and party machinery. The coming months will test the willingness of these leaders to compromise for the sake of a united opposition front. The unfolding political realignments are being closely watched, as they will undoubtedly shape the electoral landscape ahead of what is anticipated to be a highly competitive 2027 election.
