Deputy President Kithure Kindiki hosted over 60 legislators Wednesday in a move widely seen as a consolidation of power following the United Democratic Alliance's hard-fought by-election victory in Mbeere North.

Deputy President Kithure Kindiki hosted a powerful delegation of over 60 Kenya Kwanza Members of Parliament on Wednesday, a gathering framed as a celebration but signaling a significant political realignment within the ruling coalition.
The meeting at the DP's Karen residence comes less than a week after the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) candidate, Leo Wamuthende, clinched the Mbeere North parliamentary seat in a bruising by-election. This victory is pivotal, asserting Kindiki's influence in the Mt. Kenya region and reshaping power dynamics ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The legislators, drawn from 13 counties including the entire Mt. Kenya bloc, were thanked by Kindiki for their “dedication, commitment, and teamwork” that delivered the win. “I thank each and every one of you for the huge contribution you made,” Kindiki noted, emphasizing that they were ending the year on a high note.
Wamuthende won the November 27 poll with 15,802 votes against the 15,308 garnered by his closest competitor, Newton Kariuki of the Democratic Party, a narrow margin of just 494 votes that underscored the intense nature of the contest. The by-election was widely viewed as a proxy battle, pitting Kindiki against his predecessor, Rigathi Gachagua, who had backed Kariuki.
While celebratory, the meeting also had a firm agenda focused on governance. According to a statement from the UDA party, the leaders reviewed the progress of key government projects in infrastructure, security, and agriculture in their constituencies. They reportedly agreed on mechanisms to fast-track the completion of ongoing initiatives.
However, the political undertones were unmistakable. Analysts and leaders from Mt. Kenya East have been emboldened by the win, with some openly declaring Kindiki as the region's undisputed political custodian. The victory is seen as giving the Deputy President significant leverage in the jostling for the running mate position in 2027.
As the political landscape shifts, the gathering at Kindiki's residence is a clear indicator that the strategic preparations for the next election cycle are already underway. The Mbeere North win has not only secured a seat for the ruling party but has also significantly boosted the Deputy President's political stock, setting the stage for future power plays within the Kenya Kwanza coalition.
