Uhuru Kenyatta orchestrates a major purge in Azimio, firing Junet Mohamed and installing Kalonzo Musyoka as the new coalition leader.
The long knives have finally come out in the Azimio la Umoja coalition. In a ruthless "Night of the Long Knives" maneuver, Suna East MP Junet Mohamed has been purged from his powerful docket as Secretary General, a casualty of former President Uhuru Kenyatta’s aggressive return to active politics.
The restructuring, announced after a tense crisis meeting chaired by Kenyatta himself, marks the end of an era for the coalition. Junet, once the untouchable "Sultan" of the opposition and Raila Odinga’s right-hand man, has been replaced by Suba South MP Caroli Omondi. This is not just a changing of the guard; it is a complete reprogramming of the coalition’s DNA following the death of Raila Odinga in late 2025.
Uhuru Kenyatta’s fingerprints are all over this coup. By installing Kalonzo Musyoka as the new Party Leader and bringing in experienced technocrat Philip Kisia as Executive Director, Kenyatta is signaling that Azimio is shifting from a revolutionary movement to a structured corporate machine ahead of 2027.
Junet’s ouster was inevitable. Accused by affiliate parties of "internal sabotage" and mismanagement of election agents in 2022, he had become a lightning rod for the coalition's failures. "The coalition must cleanse itself," read a statement from the constituent parties—a polite way of saying Junet had to go. His replacement, Caroli Omondi, is a pragmatic operator who has recently been warming up to the government, suggesting a possible pivot in Azimio's strategy.
The removal of Junet is a gamble. While it appeases the restless partners who blamed him for the 2022 loss, it also alienates the die-hard ODM base that viewed him as a loyalist. The question now is whether Uhuru’s "corporate Azimio" can match the raw, street-level energy of the Kenya Kwanza machine.
As Junet clears his desk, the message is stark: in the new Azimio, there are no sacred cows. The revival has begun, and the first sacrifice has been offered.
