The mountain restive as impeached DP Gachagua joins forces with opposition chiefs to challenge Ruto’s grip on Central Kenya.

The battle for the soul of Mount Kenya has officially begun. In a brazen display of defiance, the United Opposition brigade descended on Murang’a County today, turning the President’s perceived backyard into a theater of political insurrection.
Led by the impeached Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, whose grassroots popularity seems to have only calcified since his ouster, the rally was a masterclass in political optics. Flanked by Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka and Narc Kenya’s Martha Karua, Gachagua framed the gathering not as a political rally, but as a "liberation movement" for the mountain region, which he claims has been marginalized by the very government it voted for.
The choice of Murang’a was strategic. As the traditional cradle of Central Kenya’s business elite and political powerbrokers, capturing Murang’a is the first step in dismantling the Kenya Kwanza coalition’s hold on the GEMA vote. The crowds, chanting anti-tax slogans and waving placards decrying the high cost of living, signaled a dangerous shift in sentiment for the ruling administration.
"They thought they could bury us," Gachagua roared to the crowd, invoking Kikuyu proverbs. "But they forgot that we are seeds. We have germinated, and the harvest will be bitter for the betrayers."
The rally ended with a resolution to hold nationwide demonstrations if the Finance Bill 2026 is not recalled. This is no longer just about 2027; it is about making the country ungovernable in the present. The United Opposition has smelled blood, and in the volatile politics of Kenya, a wounded government is often the most dangerous kind.
As the convoy snaked its way back to Nairobi, the message left behind was clear: The Mountain has moved, and it may crush those who stand in its way.
