Busia West MP Geoffrey Odanga Calls for School-Parent Collaboration on Fee Payments, Announces Increased Bursaries

Busia, Kenya – Busia West Member of Parliament, Geoffrey Odanga, has made a heartfelt appeal to school administrators within his constituency, urging them to adopt a more collaborative and understanding approach with parents regarding the timely payment of school fees. Speaking at a bursary distribution event in Matayos, where KSh 67 million was disbursed, the MP highlighted his concern that numerous students were losing valuable learning time due to being sent home over unpaid fees.

    Enhancing Educational Support

During the event, MP Odanga announced a significant increase in the bursary awards for needy students, raising the amount from KSh 4,000 to KSh 5,000 per student. This increment translates to a total of KSh 25.7 million being allocated to support 5,131 local students, aiming to alleviate the financial burden on families and keep more children in school. In his address, Odanga also voiced concerns about proposals to transfer the management of local education funds, such as the Constituency Development Fund (CDF) bursaries, to county governments. He warned that such a move could potentially harm students' access to education and called for local officials to maintain accountability and transparency in the management of these crucial educational resources.
