Boniface Mwangi warns that a fragmented opposition in 2027 will be a "coronation" for President Ruto, calling for a radical "Ballot Revolution" to dismantle the state capture

In an exclusive and fiery interview, Ukweli Party leader Boniface Mwangi has issued a "adapt or die" ultimatum to Kenya’s fractured opposition. With the 2027 General Election looming like a storm cloud, the activist-turned-politician warns that President William Ruto’s "imperial presidency" will bulldoze a divided house, cementing a legacy of impunity for decades to come.
The stakes, according to Mwangi, have transcended mere electoral mathematics. They are now existential. Speaking from the Ukweli Party headquarters in Nairobi, he dismantled the current opposition’s strategy—or lack thereof—calling it a "theatre of cowardice" that is paving the way for a Ruto dynasty. "We are not facing a politician; we are facing a system that has captured the state," Mwangi declared, his voice cutting through the humid Nairobi air. "If we do not unite now, not just as parties but as a movement of the people, 2027 will not be an election. It will be a coronation."
Mwangi’s call for unity is not a plea for the usual boardroom coalitions of tribal kingpins. He is advocating for what he terms a "Ballot Revolution"—a grassroots consolidation of the Kenya Left Alliance, civil society, and the disillusioned youth who fueled the Gen Z protests. He argues that the traditional opposition, trapped in its dynastic entanglements, has failed to check the excesses of the Kenya Kwanza administration.
His blueprint involves fielding candidates who are "untainted by the sins of the fathers." The Ukweli Party, which has struggled to gain a foothold in a system lubricated by handouts, is retooling for 2027 with a focus on integrity. "We saw what happened in 2024," Mwangi noted, referencing the state’s heavy-handed response to protests. "They have the teargas, the guns, and the billions. We have the truth. But truth without unity is just a martyr’s grave."
The activist did not mince words about the electoral commission and the judiciary, institutions he claims are slowly being asphyxiated by the executive. He drew parallels to the Moi era, warning that the "imperial presidency" is back with a vengeance, masked by legal technicalities and religious rhetoric. He pointed to the administration's systematic dismantling of independent offices as proof that the playing field is already tilted.
"Ruto is a master tactician," Mwangi admitted. "He works 24 hours a day to consolidate power. The opposition works three hours a day issuing press statements. You cannot tweet your way to State House." His challenge to fellow opposition leaders—Kalonzo Musyoka, Eugene Wamalwa, and the remnants of Azimio—is to dissolve their individual ambitions for the sake of the republic.
As the interview concluded, Mwangi offered a grim prophecy. "If we go to the ballot divided in 2027, we shouldn't even bother queuing. We should just stay home and prepare for another five years of taxes, lies, and teargas. Unity is not an option; it is our only survival strategy."
