Raphael Tuju (born March 30, 1959) is a prominent Kenyan politician, media professional, and public servant. Throughout his career, he has navigated diverse roles ranging from broadcast journalism and media production to high-level government administration, holding significant positions in the cabinets of two Kenyan presidents. Tuju was born in Kisumu, Kenya. He attended Majiwa Primary School and Nakuru West Primary School before completing his secondary education at the prestigious Starehe Boys' Centre and School. He later pursued higher education in the United Kingdom, earning a Master of Arts degree in Mass Communication from the University of Leicester. Before entering the political arena, Tuju established a distinguished career in the media industry. He began as a television news anchor at the state broadcaster, then known as Voice of Kenya (VOK), and later became one of the inaugural news anchors at the Kenya Television Network (KTN) in 1990. During this period, Tuju gained international recognition as the first African television producer to win an International Emmy Award for his documentary work, which primarily focused on health and human development issues. In 1992, he founded Ace Communications, a firm that specialized in public communication programs and produced documentaries and advertisements for international organizations, including the World Health Organization (WHO), the World Bank, and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). Tuju’s transition to national politics began in 2002 when he was elected as the Member of Parliament for Rarieda Constituency on a National Rainbow Coalition (NARC) ticket. Upon the coalition's victory, President Mwai Kibaki appointed him to the cabinet, where he served as Minister for Information and Communications, and later as Minister for Tourism and Wildlife. In 2005, he was appointed Minister for Foreign Affairs, a position he held until 2007. During his tenure as an MP, Tuju was recognized for local development initiatives in Rarieda, including the construction of schools and the implementation of water and mobile health projects. Following his departure from parliament in 2007, Tuju served as a presidential advisor and special envoy, focusing on media management and national cohesion until 2011. In 2012, he founded the Party of Action (POA), an independent vehicle for his political activities, though it struggled to gain significant national traction. He later realigned with the Jubilee Party, serving as its Secretary General from 2016 to 2025. During President Uhuru Kenyatta’s second term, Tuju was appointed Cabinet Secretary without Portfolio in 2018, a role he maintained until the end of the administration in 2022. He also played a key role as the Executive Director of the secretariat for the Azimio la Umoja coalition during the 2022 election cycle. In August 2025, Tuju formally resigned from the Jubilee Party. Tuju has been awarded the Elder of the Golden Heart (EGH), one of Kenya's highest civilian honours, for his years of public service. Regarding his personal life, he was previously married to Ruth Akinyi, with whom he has three children. In recent years, Tuju has been a subject of public attention due to his business interests in the real estate sector and associated legal disputes, most notably regarding the Dari Business Park in Nairobi.
