Neal Mohan is an American business executive who has served as the Chief Executive Officer of YouTube, a subsidiary of Alphabet Inc., since February 2023. A veteran technology leader with a deep background in digital advertising, product management, and strategic development, Mohan has been a central figure in the evolution of Google’s advertising ecosystem and YouTube’s product suite for over a decade. Born on July 14, 1973, in Lafayette, Indiana, Mohan spent his early childhood in the United States before moving to India with his family in 1985. His parents, Aditya and Deepa Mohan, were of Indian descent and had relocated to the U.S. in the 1970s. During his years in India, Mohan attended St. Francis’ College in Lucknow, where he completed his high school education. He eventually returned to the United States to pursue higher education, attending Stanford University. He graduated in 1996 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering and later returned to Stanford to earn his Master of Business Administration (MBA) in 2005. Mohan began his professional career as a consultant at Accenture before joining the advertising technology startup NetGravity. His work at NetGravity led him to DoubleClick, an online advertising company that acquired his previous employer in 1997. Mohan rose through the ranks at DoubleClick, eventually becoming the Senior Vice President of Strategy and Product Management. His expertise in digital advertising became a pivotal asset when Google acquired DoubleClick in 2007 for $3.1 billion. Mohan played a critical role in the integration of the two businesses, marking the beginning of his long-standing professional collaboration with future YouTube CEO Susan Wojcicki. At Google, Mohan held several senior leadership positions, most notably as the Senior Vice President of Display and Video Advertising. In this capacity, he oversaw the development and growth of some of the company’s most essential advertising products, cementing his reputation as an architect of Google’s digital advertising infrastructure. In 2015, he transitioned to YouTube to serve as its Chief Product Officer. During his tenure as CPO, he spearheaded the development and launch of several major products and services that redefined YouTube’s platform strategy, including YouTube TV, YouTube Music, YouTube Premium, and YouTube Shorts. He also oversaw the company's efforts regarding user experience, product design, and trust and safety initiatives, including the development of stricter content moderation policies. On February 16, 2023, following the resignation of Susan Wojcicki, Mohan was appointed as the CEO of YouTube. Since stepping into this leadership role, he has focused on maintaining YouTube’s dominance as a streaming platform while navigating the challenges of artificial intelligence, creator monetization, and competition from short-form video platforms. In addition to his executive roles, Mohan has served on the boards of companies such as Stitch Fix and 23andMe. He is married to Hema Sareen Mohan, and together they have been active in various professional and philanthropic circles. Mohan is widely recognized as a key figure in the modern digital media landscape, bridging the gap between sophisticated ad-tech systems and consumer-facing video entertainment.

Under his leadership starting in 2023, YouTube faced significant backlash from users for a widespread crackdown on third-party ad blockers, which led to complaints about the platform's increasingly aggressive advertising strategy and efforts to force users toward YouTube Premium subscriptions.
In 2024, YouTube's ad-blocker detection methods faced legal and ethical scrutiny after privacy expert Alexander Hanff filed a complaint with the Irish Data Protection Commission, alleging that the platform's detection scripts violated EU privacy laws and functioned as unauthorized spyware.
In September 2024, Mohan testified in the U.S. Department of Justice's antitrust lawsuit against Google regarding the company's digital advertising technology, where he was questioned about past internal communications concerning the acquisition and alleged 'parking' of rival ad-tech tools like AdMeld.
Throughout his tenure, Mohan has faced ongoing criticism from the YouTube creator community and users regarding policy decisions on content moderation, the monetization of AI-generated content, and increased ad loads, with some critics arguing these changes prioritize corporate revenue over the user experience.
In March 2025, YouTube had to issue warnings after scammers utilized an AI-generated deepfake video of Mohan to spread misinformation and conduct phishing attacks, falsely claiming the platform was implementing changes to its monetization policies.
