Justice Isaac Kipkurui Lenaola (born 21 December 1967 in Samburu County) is a Kenyan jurist serving as a Judge of the Supreme Court of Kenya, appointed in October 2016 after a competitive Judicial Service Commission (JSC) recruitment process. He is widely regarded as one of the country’s most experienced and internationally exposed judges, with a judicial career spanning more than two decades across Kenya’s superior courts and multiple international tribunals. Before joining the Supreme Court, he served as a High Court Judge, a Judge of the Court of Appeal (on secondment), and the Presiding Judge of the East African Court of Justice (EACJ), demonstrating a rare breadth of regional and continental judicial experience. Beyond his Kenyan judicial duties, Justice Lenaola has held significant international posts: he served as a Judge of the Residual Special Court for Sierra Leone (RSCSL), where he handled complex post-conflict, international-criminal-law and transitional-justice matters. He has also been a Member of the African Union/United Nations hybrid mechanisms in East Africa. Known for his calm, measured judicial temperament, he has contributed to major constitutional, human-rights, electoral-justice and devolution jurisprudence in Kenya since joining the Supreme Court, and he is regularly cited in scholarly and judicial forums for his work on comparative constitutionalism and judicial ethics.

Presiding Judge, East African Court of Justice: Led the First Instance Division of the EACJ, overseeing disputes involving the EAC Treaty and deepening regional integration through jurisprudence.
2012 Vetting Board review: Like many High Court judges, he appeared before the Judges and Magistrates Vetting Board; he was cleared with no adverse findings, reinforcing his reputation for integrity and competence.
Election-petition backlash (2017 & 2022): Faced political criticism—alongside the entire Supreme Court bench—during presidential-election petitions; however, no personal misconduct has ever been established.
International-jurisdiction debates: His dual service at the RSCSL occasionally sparked public debate about judges holding international appointments concurrently with domestic roles, though all were formally sanctioned and legal.
