Lady Justice Philomena Mbete Mwilu, MGH, is Kenya’s Deputy Chief Justice and Vice-President of the Supreme Court, in office since 28 October 2016. She holds LLB and LLM degrees from the University of Nairobi and was admitted to the Bar in 1984. Before elevation to the Supreme Court, she served as a High Court Judge in several divisions and was appointed to the Court of Appeal in November 2012. Earlier roles included senior legal posts in insurance and regulatory agencies. She acted as Chief Justice and President of the Supreme Court from 11 January to 19 May 2021 between the retirements of CJ Maraga and the swearing-in of CJ Koome. Litigation targeting her tenure and conduct was resolved in her favour: the High Court quashed proposed criminal charges in May 2019 and later, in November 2021, set aside efforts to remove her via the JSC. She continues to serve as Deputy Head of the Judiciary with duties reflected on official Judiciary channels.
