Farah Maalim Mohamed (commonly known as Farah Maalim) is a veteran Kenyan politician, lawyer and former magistrate who currently serves as the Member of Parliament for Dadaab Constituency in Garissa County, elected in August 2022 on a Wiper Democratic Movement–Kenya (WDM-K) ticket. He previously represented Lagdera Constituency in the National Assembly in two separate stints (1992–1997 and 2007–2013) and served as Deputy Speaker of the National Assembly from 15 January 2008 to 14 January 2013, a period that covered the Grand Coalition government and the implementation phase of the 2010 Constitution. Over his parliamentary career he has also been a member of the Speaker’s Panel and a prominent figure in northern Kenya politics, frequently speaking on issues of devolution, security operations in the north-eastern region, and the place of pastoralist communities in national decision-making. Maalim’s professional and academic trajectory underpins his standing as a legal and political heavyweight. A member of the Somali Aulihan clan, he attended Maseno School before studying law at the University of Nairobi and completing the statutory postgraduate course at the Kenya School of Law, qualifying as an Advocate of the High Court of Kenya. He also holds a BA in Development Studies (Kimmage) and an MBA, with parliamentary records indicating ongoing LLM studies at the University of Nairobi. Early in his career he served as a magistrate in the Judiciary (1982–1983) before moving fully into politics, later becoming a regular commentator on constitutionalism, governance and foreign policy in broadcast and print media. In recent years he has also been at the centre of intense public controversy over remarks about youth-led protests against the Finance Bill 2024, which prompted formal summons by the National Cohesion and Integration Commission (NCIC) and his expulsion from WDM-K, reinforcing his image as both an influential and polarising figure in contemporary Kenyan politics.

In July 2024, Farah Maalim faced significant public backlash and was summoned by the National Cohesion and Integration Commission (NCIC) following a viral video in which he purportedly suggested he would have 'slaughtered' 5,000 Gen Z protesters for attempting to overthrow the government. Maalim denied the allegations, claiming the video was edited and manipulated to misrepresent his statements.
Following the July 2024 controversy regarding his remarks on Gen Z protesters, Maalim was expelled from the Sarova Whitesands Beach Resort in Mombasa, with the hotel's management stating they did not condone his inflammatory and threatening comments.
