Bola Ahmed Adekunle Tinubu (born 29 March 1952) is the 16th President of Nigeria, in office since 29 May 2023. An accountant-turned-politician, he first rose to national prominence as Governor of Lagos State (1999–2007), where he is widely credited with overhauling Lagos’ tax system, expanding its road network and basic services, and transforming the state into Nigeria’s leading sub-national economy. Known as the “Jagaban of Borgu”, Tinubu became a central godfather figure in South-West politics, using his Lagos power base to build alliances and mentor a generation of politicians who now occupy key posts nationwide. After leaving office, Tinubu played a pivotal role in engineering the 2013 merger that formed the All Progressives Congress (APC) and in the successful 2015 and 2019 presidential bids of Muhammadu Buhari, cementing his reputation as a national kingmaker. In 2023 he converted that influence into the presidency, running on the “Renewed Hope” platform. His tenure has so far been defined by aggressive economic reforms—most notably the removal of fuel subsidies and liberalisation of the naira exchange rate—moves praised by institutions like the World Bank but fiercely contested at home for fuelling inflation and a cost-of-living crisis.
