Alexander Mundigi Munyi is a Kenyan politician serving as the Senator for Embu County. Elected to the Senate of Kenya in the 2022 general election, he represents the people of Embu County as a member of the Democratic Party of Kenya. His political trajectory is defined by persistence, grassroots engagement, and a transition from a long-standing career in the energy and industrial sector to public service at the national level. Born on October 4, 1969, Mundigi pursued his early education at Irabari Primary School, where he obtained his Certificate of Primary Education. In later years, demonstrating a commitment to academic advancement, he sat for the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) as a private candidate between 2013 and 2016. Mundigi furthered his education in theology, earning a Diploma in Biblical Studies from the International School of Ministries (2018–2022) and subsequently a Bachelor’s degree in Biblical Studies from the Covenant Theology Seminary in North Carolina, which he completed through an online program during the same period. Before his electoral success, Mundigi built a professional career spanning three decades at the Kenya Electricity Generating Company (KenGen). From 1987 to 2017, he served as a Building and Construction Administrator, overseeing projects across key infrastructure sites including the Kiambere, Masinga, and Kamburu power stations. His professional background also includes involvement in the transport sector and union leadership, as well as serving as the chairperson of the Kenya Anglican Youth Organisation from 1980 to 1990. Since 2017, he has held the position of Executive Director at Hydros Investment Ltd. Mundigi’s entry into formal politics was marked by several challenges. He made his first attempt at elective office in 2007, unsuccessfully contesting the Mbeere South parliamentary seat on a Democratic Party ticket. He continued to pursue political office in 2013 and 2017, the latter being an unsuccessful bid for the Embu senatorial seat. Despite these initial setbacks, he persisted, mounting a successful campaign in 2022. His victory was attributed to his visibility and deep connections with the local electorate, earning him the grassroots slogan, "Kava Mundigi twonaga," which translates to "We value Mundigi who is always present." Since his inauguration on August 16, 2022, Senator Mundigi has been an active member of the 13th Parliament of Kenya. He serves as the Vice Chair of the Senate Committee on Agriculture, Livestock, and Fisheries. Additionally, he is a member of the Labour and Social Welfare Committee and the Powers and Privileges Committee. His legislative work has frequently involved advocating for constituency-specific improvements and participating in Senate proceedings regarding devolution and national development. Senator Mundigi continues to balance his legislative duties with his commitment to representing the interests of Embu County residents in the upper house.
