Abdi Hakim, Wajir County's top KCSE student, overcomes drought and resource shortages to win a full university scholarship, symbolizing hope for the marginalized North.

In a region often defined by what it lacks—water, infrastructure, teachers—Abdi Hakim has proven that talent is universal. The top student in Wajir County in the 2025 KCSE exams has been awarded a full university scholarship by the Adan Keynan Foundation, a lifeline that ensures his A-grade brilliance won't be lost to poverty.
Hakim, who scored a straight A from a local day school, studied by the light of a kerosene lamp while helping his family herd goats during the worst drought in a decade. "I didn't have textbooks, but I had a dream," he told a tearful crowd at the award ceremony.
Eldas MP Adan Keynan, handing over the cheque, termed education the "only equalizer" for the North Eastern region. The scholarship covers tuition, accommodation, and a stipend for the duration of Hakim's medical degree.
Hakim plans to return to Wajir as a doctor. His story is a powerful reminder that while the government struggles to bridge the marginalization gap, community initiatives and individual resilience are keeping the flame of education alive in the frontier counties.
