In a bold address at Pipeline, President Ruto commits billions to transform Nairobi, setting strict deadlines for solving the city’s garbage, water, and housing crises.

The battle for Nairobi’s soul has begun. President William Ruto has declared war on the city’s systemic rot, announcing a sweeping "first-world" transformation agenda that targets everything from the sewers of Dandora to the classrooms of Embakasi.
In a Sunday service that doubled as a policy launchpad at AIC Pipeline, the Head of State confronted the uncomfortable truth: the Green City in the Sun has lost its shine. Citing the "poor waste management, informal settlements, and water shortages," Ruto presented a government determined to intervene. "If we are going to move Kenya to the first world, Nairobi is going to lead," he asserted, placing the capital at the vanguard of his national development strategy.
The figures are staggering. The President outlined a KES 220 billion investment in social housing, aiming to construct 169,000 units that will replace the sprawling slums defining the city's periphery. This is coupled with the construction of 16 modern markets, designed to give dignity to the "mama mboga" economy that sustains the majority of the workforce.
Crucially, the President addressed the perennial garbage crisis. He pledged a modern treatment plant at Dandora, transforming the city's greatest eyesore into a power-generating facility. This move, if executed, would solve two problems at once: sanitation and energy security.
The President’s message was clear: the era of excuses is over. By setting a specific date—April 1, 2026—for the new garbage service, he has given the public a scorecard. The residents of Pipeline cheered the vision, but in the back of their minds, they know that in Nairobi, promises are easy; it is the pavement that is hard.
President Ruto has drawn the line in the dust. Now, he must pave it.
