Makadara MP George Aladwa dismisses ODM Secretary General Edwin Sifuna's authority, sparking a turf war between the party's elite and its Nairobi grassroots base.
The battle for the soul of the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) has descended into a turf war. Makadara MP George Aladwa, the undisputed grassroots kingpin of Nairobi, has publicly dismissed the authority of Secretary General Edwin Sifuna, signaling a deepening rift between the party’s "suits" and its "soldiers."
Speaking at a charged rally in Eastlands, Aladwa scoffed at recent strategy meetings convened by Sifuna and Siaya Governor James Orengo. He characterized them as "boardroom gossip" disconnected from the reality of the mwananchi. "You cannot sit in a hotel in Kilimani and dictate what happens in Mathare," Aladwa thundered, to wild applause.
The conflict highlights a class struggle within the orange party. Sifuna and Orengo represent the intellectual, legalistic wing that favors a hardline opposition stance. Aladwa, a former Mayor, leads the populist wing that controls the influential network of party chairmen and youth groups in the capital.
Aladwa’s outburst is a warning shot to anyone hoping to inherit Raila Odinga’s mantle without securing the Nairobi vote block. By dismissing the Secretary General, he is effectively declaring Nairobi an autonomous zone. As ODM prepares for its grassroots elections, the capital is shaping up to be the bloodiest battlefield of them all.
