Safaricom surpasses 50 million Kenyan subscribers and 10 million in Ethiopia as it gears up for its 25th-anniversary celebrations this October.
Safaricom has officially surpassed 50 million subscribers in Kenya, a landmark reached ahead of its silver jubilee in October 2025. The telco began operations in 2000 with only 17,000 users—a testament to two-and-a-half decades of growth and innovation .
Group CEO Dr. Peter Ndegwa described this achievement as reflective of a “deep connection” and sustained trust from Kenyans throughout Safaricom’s journey .
Safaricom’s ascent is closely tied to pioneering services like M-Pesa, and ongoing initiatives such as Sambaza Furahaand M-Pesa Sokoni, which have reinforced customer loyalty and widened its inclusive digital ecosystem .
Beyond Kenya, Safaricom’s Ethiopian subsidiary has already crossed 10 million subscribers, highlighting rapid uptake in a challenging market .
This expansion aligns with the telco’s broader goal to become Africa’s leading purpose-driven technology firm by 2030 .
For the fiscal year ending March 2025, Safaricom posted a strong net income of KSh 69.8 billion, with total revenues reaching KSh 381.2 billion, up 11.4% year-on-year. M‑Pesa alone accounted for significant growth, representing about 44% of service revenue in Kenya .
The company contributed approximately KSh 722 billion to Kenya’s economy, supporting over 1.28 million jobs. Its foundations enabled access to education, healthcare, and income-generation for more than 8 million Kenyans .
