President Ruto Orders Full Investigation into Protest Violence, Vows Accountability

NAIROBI, Kenya – June 30, 2025

After days of turmoil across the country, President William Ruto has announced the launch of a full investigation into the violence that marred recent protests. The demonstrations, sparked by public dissatisfaction with economic policies and tax proposals, escalated into clashes between civilians and police, resulting in injuries, arrests, and widespread property damage.

In a televised address to the nation, President Ruto stated,

“Let it be clear: we will not tolerate lawlessness. Anyone who attacked police officers or destroyed public property will face the full force of the law.”

The government has faced criticism from both local and international human rights organizations over the handling of the protests. While some have accused law enforcement of excessive force, government officials maintain that the police acted in defense of public safety.

President Ruto called for restraint, urging citizens to exercise their constitutional right to protest in a peaceful manner. He also hinted at the possibility of national dialogue to address grievances and rebuild public trust.

“We must work together—peacefully—to build a better Kenya. Our democracy allows dissent, but violence must never be the tool of expression.”
