Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua defended his remarks on election violence, calling himself Kenya’s 'most peaceful leader' and telling critics to examine their own record
GATANGA, Kenya – May 18
Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has hit back at accusations linking him to inciteful rhetoric, stating that he has never advocated for violence and remains one of Kenya’s most peace-loving leaders.
Speaking during a public event in Gatanga, Gachagua said his recent remarks—widely criticized by Deputy President Kithure Kindiki and Roads Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen—were misinterpreted. He clarified that he was merely reminding Kenyans of his contributions during his time in leadership, particularly the support he gave to former presidents.
“I have worked closely with my former bosses and was instrumental in their success. My intention was to reflect on that record—not to stir tension,” said Gachagua.
In a pointed message to his critics, Gachagua urged Kindiki and Murkomen to concentrate on their own track records instead of attacking him.
“Let each leader be judged by their performance. I have never—and will never—support or promote violence. I am the most peaceful leader in this country,” he declared.
Gachagua’s comments come in the wake of heightened political rhetoric as the country edges closer to the 2027 general elections. His initial remarks had drawn strong rebuke from Kindiki, who labeled them “reckless and dangerous.”
However, Gachagua maintained that his political legacy speaks for itself and emphasized the importance of peaceful political engagement moving forward.
