Leaked documents reveal a controversial Australian opposition plan to ban migrants from Somalia and Gaza, sparking accusations of discrimination.

A leaked document from Australia’s Liberal Party has triggered a diplomatic firestorm, revealing a secret proposal to ban all immigration from "terror-prone" regions—including Somalia and Gaza.
The draft policy, dubbed "Operation Gatekeeper," reads like a wishlist for the far-right. Concocted within the office of former Opposition Leader Sussan Ley, the plan proposed a blanket ban on visa applicants from 37 regions across 13 countries. The justification?National security.
The list includes regions in the Philippines, sections of the Middle East, and most notably for East Africa, Somalia. Under the proposal, anyone who has even resided in these areas could be automatically refused entry to Australia, with no right to appeal.
The leak has blindsided the Australian political establishment. The new Opposition Leader, Angus Taylor, has scrambled to distance himself from the document, calling it "invalid." However, insiders suggest the sentiment remains alive within the party's conservative faction, who are pushing for a "Trump-style" border agenda.
For the Somali diaspora and East African diplomats, the proposal is a slap in the face. Australia has long benefitted from the industriousness of its Somali community. To label an entire nation's people as security risks based on geography is a return to the "White Australia" policy of old.
While the plan is currently just a leaked draft, it signals a dangerous shift in Western political rhetoric. The message is clear: the borders of the Global North are hardening, and the passport in your pocket is becoming a judge, jury, and executioner.
