Raila Odinga Slams Murkomen Over ‘Shoot to Kill’ Remarks, Warns Against Extrajudicial Killings

Opposition leader calls for lawful policing while condemning violent protesters

Bondo, Kenya – Opposition leader Raila Odinga has issued a scathing rebuke of Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen’s controversial statement suggesting that police should shoot anyone approaching police stations during protests. Speaking during a church service in his hometown of Bondo on Sunday, Odinga described the remarks as “a big shame” and warned of the dangerous implications of encouraging extrajudicial killings.

“We should not encourage taking away life in a way that is not constitutional,” said Odinga. He emphasized that anyone accused of wrongdoing must be processed through the legal system and not subjected to summary execution. His comments come amid mounting national and international scrutiny of the Kenyan government’s handling of recent protests, which have been marred by violence and claims of excessive force by police.

Odinga also took a firm stance against violent protestors, declaring, “We condemn those who went to the streets to destroy property and burn police stations.” His dual message called for both accountability from the state and restraint from citizens.

Murkomen has since claimed his statements were taken out of context, but Odinga’s intervention has reignited a critical national conversation on the professionalism and constitutionality of policing in Kenya. As pressure grows on the government to uphold human rights, Odinga’s voice adds significant weight to calls for reform and lawful conduct within the security sector.
