Opposition leaders accuse the National Police Service of morphing into a regime protection squad, alleging complicity in the rise of "Haitian-style" gangs terrorizing protesters

The simmering tension between the opposition and the security apparatus boiled over today. Led by Kalonzo Musyoka and Martha Karua, leaders of the United Opposition marched to the steps of the National Police Service headquarters, delivering a damning indictment of the force’s conduct.
Their grievance is specific and chilling: they allege that the police are no longer just suppressing dissent but are actively collaborating with armed criminal gangs to attack citizens. They termed the current security situation a "state-sponsored anarchy."
The opposition presented a dossier of complaints detailing 24 separate attacks since November 2024. In these incidents, they claim uniformed officers stood by—or worse, provided cover—while armed goons assaulted peaceful protesters and looted businesses.
"We are seeing the Haitianization of our security sector," Karua declared, referencing the gang warfare in the Caribbean nation where Kenyan police are deployed. "The police have become judge, jury, and executioner. They are a death squad in uniform."
The Inspector General of Police has yet to respond personally, though spokespersons have previously dismissed such claims as political propaganda. However, with video evidence circulating of plainclothes gunmen operating alongside uniformed officers, the denial is becoming harder to sustain.
Today's march was not just a protest; it was a warning. The opposition is signaling that the line between law enforcement and criminality has vanished, and they are preparing to take their case to the international community.
