Nyamira County Members of the County Assembly (MCAs) have voted to impeach Governor Amos Nyaribo, citing gross constitutional violations and abuse of office. The decision now moves to the Senate, which will determine the governor's ultimate fate.

NYAMIRA, KENYA – Nyamira Governor Amos Nyaribo was impeached on Tuesday, November 25, 2025, after a decisive vote by the County Assembly, marking the culmination of a protracted political battle that has seen two previous attempts to remove him from office fail. In a heated afternoon session, 23 out of 31 Members of County Assembly (MCAs) present supported the ouster motion, surpassing the required two-thirds threshold.
The motion, tabled by Bonyamatuta Ward MCA and Majority Leader Julius Kimwomi Matwere, accused the governor of several impeachable offenses, including gross violation of the Constitution and other laws, abuse of office, irregular appointments, and mismanagement of public funds. Following the vote, Assembly Speaker Thaddeus Nyabaro confirmed he would formally notify the Senate, which is constitutionally mandated to review the case and make a final determination.
A central allegation in the successful impeachment motion was Governor Nyaribo's purported support for an illegal, parallel county assembly faction known as “Bunge Mashinani.” This breakaway group, led by former Speaker Enock Okero, held unsanctioned meetings across the county between October 2024 and June 2025. The motion argued that by endorsing and engaging with this “unlawful, illegal and unconstitutional” body, the governor undermined the legitimate authority of the County Assembly and violated the rule of law. The High Court had previously affirmed Okero's ouster in June 2025, rendering all subsequent actions by his faction illegal.
Further charges included:
This was the third attempt by the Nyamira County Assembly to remove Governor Nyaribo. He narrowly survived a previous motion in September 2024 by a single vote. An earlier attempt in October 2023 also failed to achieve the necessary numbers. The persistent efforts to oust him highlight the deep political divisions and institutional conflict between the executive and the legislature in Nyamira County.
The governor's troubles are compounded by an ongoing investigation by the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC). In October 2025, EACC detectives raided the governor's homes and offices in connection with an alleged irregular tender worth KSh 382 million, a probe that has intensified the political pressure on his administration.
According to the Constitution of Kenya, the speaker of the County Assembly must, within two days, transmit the resolution to the Speaker of the Senate. The Senate then has seven days to convene and hear the charges. It can choose to investigate the matter as a whole house or form a special 11-member committee to report on the findings within ten days. To uphold the impeachment and remove the governor from office, a majority of all Senate delegations must vote in favour. If the Senate upholds the impeachment, the Deputy Governor, James Gesami, would assume office for the remainder of the term. However, the governor retains the right to challenge the process in court. Governor Nyaribo's legal team has previously dismissed the accusations as a politically motivated witch-hunt.
