Governor Erick Mutai will be tried in full Senate after a bid for an 11-member committee collapsed. Hearings set for August 27–29, following County Assembly’s impeachment motion.
Nairobi, Kenya – Kericho Governor Erick Mutai will face a full Senate impeachment trial after a motion to form an 11-member special committee was withdrawn due to lack of support.
On August 20, 2025, Senate Majority Leader Aaron Cheruiyot moved a motion under Order No. 9 to establish a special committee to investigate Mutai’s impeachment. The motion failed to attract a seconder and was withdrawn under Standing Order 71. Minority Leader Stewart Madzayo declined support. Deputy Speaker Kathuri Murungi’s alternative suggestion was overruled. Therefore, the Senate will proceed in plenary.
Hearings scheduled August 27–29, 2025, starting at 9:00 a.m. daily in the Senate Chamber at Parliament Buildings, Nairobi.
The Clerk of the Senate will issue appearance invitations on August 21. Parties must file responses by 5 p.m. on August 25. Documents and schedule will be circulated to senators by August 26.
Initiated by Kericho County Assembly on August 15, 2025: 33 out of 47 MCAs voted to impeach Governor Mutai.
Allegations include misuse of office, illegal and irregular appointments, unlawful dismissals of senior officials, and fictitious payments including KSh 85.7 million to 46 firms for undelivered goods and services.
This marks the second impeachment attempt; Mutai survived a similar bid in October 2024.
