Kenya Targets 27% Rise in Ugandan Tourists by 2025 Amid Strong Regional Ties
Nairobi, Kenya — Kenya has unveiled an ambitious plan to boost tourist arrivals from neighboring Uganda by 27% over the next year, setting a target of 300,000 Ugandan visitors by December 2025. The announcement was made by Tourism Cabinet Secretary Rebecca Miano on May 24 during the official opening of the 11th edition of the Pearl of Africa Tourism Expo in Kampala.
CS Miano attributed the projected growth to improved road and air transport connectivity, as well as the implementation of visa-free travel within the East African Community (EAC), which she said is already easing cross-border movement and encouraging regional tourism.
“Uganda remains Kenya’s top African source market, and we are committed to strengthening this partnership through targeted promotions and collaborative efforts,” said Miano. “Our aim is to position East Africa as a seamless, vibrant destination that offers diverse experiences for regional and international travelers alike.”
The Cabinet Secretary highlighted Kenya’s strategic involvement in joint regional marketing under the banner “Visit East Africa: Feel the Vibe,” an initiative designed to drive intra-African travel and elevate the region’s global tourism profile. As part of this campaign, Kenya is spotlighting its rich tourism portfolio—from sun-soaked coastal beaches and world-class safari adventures to the dynamic cultural and nightlife scenes of cities like Nairobi and Mombasa.
Miano noted that the long-standing bilateral ties between Kenya and Uganda form a strong foundation for mutual tourism growth, further supported by shared infrastructure projects and regional integration frameworks.
The Pearl of Africa Tourism Expo, hosted annually by the Uganda Tourism Board, draws hundreds of exhibitors, travel agents, and buyers from across East Africa and beyond. It serves as a vital platform for forging partnerships, unveiling new travel packages, and fostering economic cooperation within the tourism sector.
With tourism playing a crucial role in Kenya’s economic recovery and job creation efforts, the renewed focus on regional source markets like Uganda is expected to yield significant returns and deepen cross-border collaboration.
