Homa Bay Town MP Peter Kaluma has asserted that Martha Karua’s push for the presidency in 2027 cannot succeed without securing the support of Raila Odinga and his political network, even after her formal endorsement by the People’s Liberation Party (PLP).
Homa Bay, Kenya — September 27, 2025 (EAT).
Homa Bay Town MP Peter Kaluma has asserted that Martha Karua’s push for the presidency in 2027 cannot succeed without securing the support of Raila Odinga and his political network, even after her formal endorsement by the People’s Liberation Party (PLP).
Speaking at a political gathering in Homa Bay, Kaluma said that Karua’s campaign—despite its idealism—lacks the structures and mass base that Raila’s machinery brings. He warned that she risks being sidelined unless she joins forces with his coalition.
He was quoted saying: “Karua can’t go anywhere without Raila. She needs more than ambition—she needs alliances.”
Karua and PLP: Karua leads the PLP and is crafting an anti-dynasty narrative. Her “one-term presidency” pledge and talk of foundational reforms are part of her repositioning.
Raila’s base: As a long-established opposition leader, Odinga retains influence in several regions and remains a critical actor in coalition politics.
Pre-election arithmetic: Many political analysts believe no candidate will win 2027 on their own—the coalition winner will carry multiple support blocs.
Coalition pressure: Karua may face pressure to enter pre-election alliances or endorsement deals with leaders like Odinga.
Negotiating leverage: Kaluma’s comments may be a move to test Karua’s willingness to cooperate or yield in coalition talks.
Perception management: Karua’s campaign must manage narratives of independence versus dependence if she does ally with Odinga.
Voter sentiment: For some voters, an alliance with Odinga may bolster legitimacy; for others, it may undermine the “change” story.
